We are delighted to share that Olympic Handball Ireland has been awarded €20,000 from Sport Ireland under the 2025 Women in Sport (WIS) Programme.

This funding represents a significant boost to the work we have been doing to grow women’s participation across all levels of our sport. It allows us to continue and expand key initiatives focused on active participation, coaching and officiating, and increasing the visibility of women in handball.

Caroline Nerbas, our Women in Sport Lead, commented on the impact of the grant:

“The WIS funding will keep the work OHI has been doing to grow women’s participation across all levels. It’s an important support from Sport Ireland, which will be used in areas such as coaching & officiating, active participation and visibility. We want more women involved in the sport and with the funding we’re able to support key initiatives to do so.”

Over the past year, we have launched several targeted programmes, including offering free or subsidised coaching and refereeing courses for women, supporting local blitz events, and showcasing role models within our community. This new funding ensures we can continue building on that momentum—bringing handball to more schools, clubs, and communities, and creating lasting pathways for women to engage with the sport.

We are proud to be part of a national movement working to close the gender participation gap and are committed to ensuring women have equal opportunity to participate, lead, and thrive in Olympic Handball.

Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive future for our sport.
