Olympic Handball Ireland recently welcomed Output Sports to ASTRA Handball Club for an exciting demonstration of cutting-edge athlete testing technology, and we hope it's just the beginning.
Output Sports is a Dublin-based sports tech company with deep roots in both science and sport. Co-founder and CTO Julian Eberle is himself a national Olympic Handball player, and experienced firsthand the performance monitoring challenges the technology was built to solve. Think Business Alongside Julian, the company was co-founded by Dr. Martin O'Reilly and Dr. Darragh Whelan, who developed the platform during their PhD research at University College Dublin. irishsportindustryawards
Output Sports has grown to become a partner of some of the world's most elite organisations. More than 800 sports organisations now use the platform, including more than half of all English Premier League clubs, and teams across the NFL, NBA, and NHL. The Irish Times The technology has even supported Olympic medal-winning performances, all driven by a single wearable sensor that delivers fast, reliable athlete data.
ASTRA players were put through a testing battery specifically selected for the demands of handball, including countermovement jump (CMJ) and reactive strength index (10-5 RSI) assessments for lower limb power, shoulder range of motion testing, and medicine ball throw assessments. Each athlete received an individualised performance profile, the kind of objective data that informs smarter training and supports injury prevention.
The session ran smoothly alongside normal training, with Output Sports testing small groups of players at a time while the rest of the squad continued their session as normal.
This demo was a first step, and a very positive one. OHI hopes to build on this experience and develop a longer-term collaboration with Output Sports that could benefit teams and players across the senior league. Watch this space.
We'd like to thank Ryan Summersby and the Output Sports team.
